LaVere painted many animals over his long career. In l955 he did a pastel of "two kittens" which is in the private collection of Dorothy Smart in Idaho Falls, Idaho. But for him, the epitomy of water color control and execution was in the painting of horses. "One mistake and the painting ends up in the trash".

Over his 30 years of working in the medium of watercolor he painted many Western style paintings, but there are very few of these paintings available. Most of them are in private collections. There are but a few of these lovely original pieces in the gallery. The first one shown below is "Splitting the Herd" it is 33"x44" and one of his largest watercolors. He considered this piece one of his five most important.
