LaVere was a very proper man. The father of 5 children, he had certainly seen nude women, but painting the nude was a particular challenge to him. His preference to paint people from behind was overriden when he had no choice but to paint the model from the front. All of his mastery of light and color had to be called upon to help him recover his control. These few nudes are all that remain in the family gallery.
