LaVere enjoyed the challenge of painting complicated images. One of his favorite subjects included reflections and snow. Much of watercolor requires saving out areas, meticulous planning and a deft hand. Many of these pieces show him at the height of his craft.
He also painted a number of smaller, less complicated reflective pieces such as "Tranquility", and "Dusk". These he described as his "woodland scenes". They are included here because they depict winter and reflect psychological importance to LaVere's body of work. These small paintings were his meditative expressions, his commune with Nature. The majority of these pieces are in the hands of his private collectors. Some of these, however, are still available for sale. (price list)
His painting "Winter Decor" is a brilliant execution of an impressionist syle saturated with reality. The way he saved out the snow covered tree branches adds so much to the mood and realism. It was so typical of him that he would paint the simplicity of an alley, the road less traveled.
"Street Lights", a scene from nearby Jamestown, CA. (where he painted for the last 20 years of his life) is another large piece draped in moodiness, showing Christmas lights and a glistening street.
During his years in Idaho, LaVere traveled between Idaho Falls and Jackson Hole, Wyoming painting the rivers and streams and mountains he loved. His paintings of the mountains began at an early age and covered many years and mediums. "Winter Rhapsody" is one of several paintings of the wild solitude of South East Idaho.
The painting "Melting Snow" was the opening spread for an article in"American Artist Magazine" (l988). The painting "Street Lights" a streetscene of Jamestown, California at Christmas, is available as a print. "Winter Decor" has yet to be made into a print but we hope to make it available later this year.
